When the time comes to mix a newly created song things can get overwhelming in a hurry. With all of the VST effects available and thousands of presets at your fingertips it can be tempting to pull up a “mastering” plugin and select the “radio read mix” preset and export the result as your final mix. Who knows, maybe you’ll get lucky and actually have a radio ready mix, but don’t count on it. Before you go slapping compressors and limiters everywhere you take a moment to relax and then start setting your fader levels. Once you’ve gotten a basic rough mix you should open an EQ instead of the compressor. With EQ you can lower specific overbearing frequencies and boost others to bring out a more vibrant sound in each of your tracks. I’m not going to get into the depth’s of multi-track mixing but below you will find 2 frequency charts that can be used as a starting point for your mixes. On a side not, if you want to hear what a bad mix sounds like there are more than a few prime examples on my music page.

I’ve already shown you in this post how to completely remove post thumbnails from displaying. Another option would be to only display post thumbnails when you have actually selected a thumbnail. Normally if no post thumbnail is set then the default thumbnail will display. Some people will like this and some won’t. I personally don’t like this behavior although i do understand it’s potential usefulness. Luckily, extatix from the Arras Theme forums has come up with the following solution.

Open up your filters.php file and change

if ( arras_get_option('single_thumbs') ) {
 $postheader .= '</p><div>' . arras_get_thumbnail('featured-slideshow-thumb') . '</div><p>';
}

to

if ( arras_get_option('single_thumbs') && has_post_thumbnail($id) ) { //removes default thumbnail display when no post thumbnail is set
 $postheader .= '</p><div>' . arras_get_thumbnail('featured-slideshow-thumb') . '</div><p>';
}

An eye catching feature of the Arras theme for WordPress is it’s ability to show a post thumbnail at the top of your posts. The problem with this is that it will show on your static pages as well. Even if you don’t set a thumbnail for the pages the default thumbnail image will show. This may be useful for some people and some sites buy if you’re like me then you really don’t like it at all. The good news is that you can easily remove the post thumbnail from your static pages. All we will be doing is adding
&& is_single()
to the filters.php file in the library directory of the Arras theme folder. Once you find the file open it up and go to line 48 and look for the following code.

if ( arras_get_option('single_thumbs') ) {
 $postheader .= '</p><div>' . arras_get_thumbnail('featured-slideshow-thumb') . '</div><p>';
}

All that is needed is the addition of
&& is_single()
to the code. By doing so the code will now tell Arras to load the post thumbnail only if the single_thumbs(post thumbnail) option is selected in the theme’s admin and only on single posts.

if ( arras_get_option('single_thumbs') && is_single() ) { //removes thumbnail display from pages
 $postheader .= '</p><div>' . arras_get_thumbnail('featured-slideshow-thumb') . '</div><p>';
}

The Arras theme is in my opinion the best free theme available for Wordpress

The Arras theme is in my opinion the best free theme available for WordPress. It’s described as a “Magazine Style” theme. Basically it brings as much content as possible to the landing page(homepage). Arras makes extensive use of the “post thumbnail” setting available in WordPress version 2.9.2 and on. If you are a pre-2.9.2 user the theme can use a custom field “thumb” to set the thumbnail. It should be noted that this custom field option can be used in version 2.9.2 and higher as well as long as WordPress continues to support custom fields, and they probably will.

Arras features an in-depth set of theme options. It doesn’t have so many options that it becomes overwhelming but plenty enough to customize it to your own style and personality. Speaking of style, the developer has been nice enough to include a stylesheet named user.css that you can use to add your own styles. You can even use the user.css file to override any of the default styles. No need to select an option or even create a file. The file’s already included and all you have to do is insert your css styles.

If you use the wp-pagenavi plugin you’ll be pleased to know that a matching plugin style is already included in the theme’s stylesheet. In addition the code that calls the wp-pagenavi plugin is already built into the theme so all you have to do is activate the plugin. There is also an included template file for the “Yet another related posts” plugin. In order to use the template file just go to the plugin’s settings page in the dashboard and you will find an option to use the template. In the theme options page you will also find links to a few other plugins that are recommended by the developer. One of these is the “Sexy bookmarks” plugin that I think looks very good with this theme.

One major added plus for the Arras theme is the support available. The theme’s site has a support forum as well as many how-to’s. If you’re interested in upcoming changes to the theme you can visit the Arras project on google code. There you will be able to get a sneak peak at what’s changing in the code as well as what bugs have been found. You can also file a bug report there as well.

If your site is begging for a more professional look and you don’t have the cash to have one developed for you then you should give the Arras theme a try.

WordPress is a very feature rich basis in which you run your website on. Through the use of plugins you can extend the functionality of your site. After using WordPress for several years I have found myself using certain plugins consistently and constantly. Most of the plugins add features that I believe WordPress should include by default. I have compiled a list of plugins I feel are an absolute must when running a WordPress site.

“Hide Pages” by Thomas Howard of Instinct Entertainment : A plugin that provides a simple way of hiding pages from the frontend menu.

“My Page Order” by Andrew Charlton : My Page Order allows you to set the order of pages through a drag and drop interface. The default method of setting the order page by page is extremely clumsy, especially with a large number of pages.

“WP-PageNavi” by Lester ‘GaMerZ’ Chan : Adds a more advanced paging navigation to your WordPress blog.

“Lightbox 2” by Rupert Morris : Used to overlay images on the current page.

“Maintenance Mode” by Michael Wöhrer : Adds a splash page to your blog that lets visitors know your blog is down for maintenance. Logged in administrators get full access to the blog including the front-end.

As a songwriter working in a digital world I’ve been taught that ctrl+s is my best friend. Constantly hitting save in your DAW could save alot of frustration in the event that the program crashes. I’m sure most of you already live by this rule as well as most everybody else that requires up-to-date project files and who use the computer as a tool to compose their work such as writers, graphic artists, etc… Since hard drives have a tendency to fail at the worst possible moment it’s a good idea to create backups of your work. What I’d like to suggest is that you create at least two backups of your work on a regular basis. There are three mediums that I personally prefer to backup up my work to. The first one is CD/DVD, depending on the amount of data I need to backup. The good thing about this type of medium is that it’s cheap and programs such as Samplitude support this type of backup as a built-in feature. The second medium I use for backups are thumb drives. These small flash drives are fairly dependable and price per GB are constantly dropping. They also have the benefit of being extremely portable which means large backups can be kept in your pocket wherever you go. The next type of backup can be useful depending on who you are. Online storage is dependable and flexible but cost will vary greatly depending on where you get your online storage from. Storing your data online can be useful but it can also backfire if you are someone that alot of people are interested in. The reason I say this is because if you don’t choose a secure method of storing and sending your work online then it can be leaked, stolen or tampered with. If you are someone like me that doesn’t have a huge following then you should be ok. No matter what forms of backup you use you should try your best to keep them secure. If you keep more than one form of backup then you should be able to rest assured that if your hard drive crashes and your backup is corrupted then you will have a “fail-safe” backup.
