I’ve had my Acer 5515 laptop for a while now. It came with Windows Vista Home Basic preinstalled, which works very well. However, I prefer to use linux most of the time, Ubuntu being my favorite version of linux. When I first got the laptop I installed Ubuntu Hardy which worked good, but not great. In hardy my video’s wouldn’t play correctly and I couldn’t get connect to wifi. I tried every hack I could think of or read about to get the wifi working but had no luck. Hoping for better luck with a newer version I tried installing Ubuntu Ibex. Ibex would install but I couldn’t get it to run after installation. I could’ve disabled some things to get it to work I think but I choose to go back to using Windows Vista until I had a better option. That better option is Ubuntu Jaunty alpha 5. At first boot everything worked. I was able to see my wireless network and to my surprise I was actually able to connect to it. The video showed correctly without me having to mess with it as well as sound. I just hope that things work this well with the final release. I forgot to mention that playing videos in this version on this particular laptop is almost as smooth as playback in Vista which was a nice surprise. I haven’t checked into what all is new in this version but it appears as though they have revamped X.

My new Acer Aspire 5515 notebook

I got myself a new laptop to use as my recording pc. It came with Windows Vista Home Basic installed and it has an AMD64 processor. It’s only a 1.6Ghz processor though. I’ve already installed all my recording programs except for Samplitude. I’ve also installed the EZdrummer VST which is the main reason I need a computer in the first place. The 3Gb’s of installed ram really help out in using EZdrummer. The onboard sound is not that great which I expected so I will need to get a usb sound card to record with. I tried to record through the built-in sound card input but the latency was impossible to work with. I could try the ASIO4all driver but I’d rather just buy a new soundcard and use it’s drivers. I’m currently dual booting Ubuntu 8.04 with Vista and I’ll probably write up a dedicated post to explain the problems I encountered.

Krom8.com domain name mine again

I finally bought back my old domain name krom8.com . It’s been about a year since I last had it. I don’t post much here anymore or record much either since getting our new house. I’ve been putting alot of work and money into the house but I’m almost broke and about as tired as I can be so I’m going to take a break from the real world for while to get back into recording. My recording pc died but I still have my Korg D16 that I will continue to use for recording. I still need to work out something for a recording pc. Anyways, krom8.com should forward to krom8.net within the next couple of days.
